Just when you thought it safe to pop the cork on the magnum of champagne squirreled away in the dark recess of the refrigerator to celebrate your official empty nest, here they come trudging back home. Overgrown rug rats in adult clothing. Tall toddlers you raised with sweat and tears for over two decades of 24/7 motherhood, set free into the world as independent people, back home again. Who knew? The fresh coat of paint hasn’t dried on the walls of your new office or exercise room, and these “boomerang” kids show up demanding their old rooms returned to them in original condition.
Adult children are moving back in with their parents at alarming rates in the Twenty-first century bringing more baggage with them. Not designer-label kinds, mind you, but the damaged-emotional-duffle-bag kind. This epidemic of frightening proportions is afflicting many baby boomers in America today. For every two or three children who mature into successful, independent young adults, there is one who can't quite get it together and comes home to Mama. The latest U. S. Census data reports one out of four (27%) 18 to 34 year olds are living with their parents. (The author respectfully requests permission to live at one of those other three homes. Please.) These young people are classified as the Boomerang Generation; always coming back to the place they started.
When this happens, you need to stand up and help them take that first step toward independence. Take action. Start by reading this helpful tome, then hit them up the side of their head with the book, drop it on their stocking feet propped up on your coffee table for the gazillionth time or lean it against the empty carton of orange juice in the refrigerator. Magic mirror on the wall; show the Boomerang down the hall.
